Telemedicine Q&A

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine uses technologies like the internet, tablets, cellphones or computers to exchange mental health information securely. It provides a quick and convenient way to meet with Dr. Iofin, even if you’re too busy to visit his office in person.

Telemedicine was first invented more than 40 years ago, but it’s become increasingly popular over the last few years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Telemedicine allows Dr. Iofin to continue seeing patients in a safe and convenient enviornment.

What are the benefits of telemedicine?

Telemedicine offers various benefits, including:

Convenience

If you have children or care for an elderly loved one, finding a babysitter or substitute caretaker can be nearly impossible. With telemedicine, you don’t have to leave home. You can meet with Dr. Iofin and still maintain your responsibilities.

No risk of exposure to people who are sick

Visiting the psychiatrist in person requires you to sit in a waiting room. This can put you at risk if you’re immunocompromised or undergoing cancer treatment. Scheduling a telemedicine visit means you can consult with Dr. Iofin without risking your physical health.

A more comfortable experience

Talking about your feelings, outlook, and behavior takes lots of courage. Discussing these things with someone in a new environment can be overwhelming. With telemedicine, you can stay in a familiar setting. This makes it easier to talk about challenging emotions.

What happens during a telemedicine visit?

Dr. Iofin tailors telemedicine visits to each individual’s needs.

At the beginning of your consultation, he completes a psychiatric evaluation. Dr. Iofin asks about the reason for your visit and the symptoms you’re experiencing. He quizzes you about your feelings and behavior patterns and has you complete a comprehensive questionnaire.

Dr. Iofin compares your responses to the criteria for various mental health disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). If you meet the guidelines for a specific condition, Dr. Iofin develops a personalized treatment plan.

What types of mental health disorders can telemedicine diagnose?

Dr. Iofin uses telemedicine to diagnose various mental health disorders, including:

  • Adult attention-deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Panic Disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Eating disorders
